Ragman is a narrative artists’ book titled after a song I often heard my mother sing when I was a child.

When she was young, she would listen for the Ragman, an African American recycler whose route included the white working class neighborhood where she was raised.

The Rag Man’s song was really more of a street cry. It was an element in an everyday soundscape
within the larger context of racially-segregated Louisville, Kentucky in the 1940s.

The book is a do-si-do construction, made from original handmade cotton paper,
couched with stained rags and dish towels.

Other elements of this book are laser-printed text, vintage photograph reproductions,
masking tape and staples.
